The Nature of Suzuki
Release Date: 2012

Directed / Produced by Kyle Hunter Welton

The year is 2007, An Inconvenient Truth is poised to win the Oscar, climate change is the top issue of the political landscape and environment icon, David Suzuki is embarking across Canada on what is likely his last major national speaking tour.

Travelling by bus and speaking to over 40 communities in 30 days, Suzuki’s ‘What Would You Do for the Environment If You Were Prime Minister?’ tour set out to take advantage of the rising public concern for the environment in order to get Canada back on track to true sustainability.

Now, years later, everything has changed. The economy has replaced the environment as the top public concern and the Kyoto Accord has fallen by the way side. By Suzuki’s own admission, it may well be too late.

What happened?

The Nature of Suzuki is a penetrating look of the renowned Canadian icon as he laments that very question. Following him on his 2007 coast to coast tour and interviewing him in the present day, The Nature of Suzuki is part Canadian environmental road movie and part intimate portrait. It captures the rise and fall of a movement and the hopes and dreams of man who has given everything to the cause.
